Below you will find useful information about the color we love so much. The color silver has gone through a series of name changes and some years was not even produced. Below you will find the years broken out, the name of silver or close to the color silver for that year, and silver production numbers if information was made available.
1979

Our Color Name of the Year: Silver Metallic

Like the two previous redesigns, the 1979 Mustang is based on an existing platform. The Fox platform, which supports the Fairmont and the Mercury Zephyr, is an ideal match for Mustang. Longer and taller than the Mustang II, it is no minor feat that the latest evolution weighs 200 pounds less.

Chief designer John "Jack" Telnack is credited with giving Mustang its updated "Euro" look. An aero polyurethane nose, rectangular headlights, egg crate-style grille, raked windshield and cleaner lines, not to mention the lowest drag coefficient to date, 0.44, are a complete departure from the Mustang II.

An available TRX handling package reacquaints the Mustang enthusiast with performance handling. Complemented by 15.3-inch aluminum wheels with 195/65R390 Michelin TRX elliptical radials, the TRX handling package features revised bushings, antisway bars, shocks, struts and springs.

Underneath, a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and the 5.0L V8 provide a respectable base for engineers to tweak in the years to come.

The redesigned '79 Mustang is the Official Pace Car of the 62nd Annual Indianapolis 500. Jack Roush and the Roush Racing team equip the Mustangs pacing the race with Boss 302 parts and a blueprinted heavy-duty block. 351 Windsor heads, forged steel crank and connecting rods, four-barrel Holley carbs and free-flowing, 1.54-inch, dual exhausts comprise the hardware. With C-4 three-speed automatic transmissions and a tall rear axle ratio, these 250-plus-horsepower Fox Mustangs are right at home in front of the field.

The Cobra model was carried over from the Mustang II. Like all 1979 Mustangs, it featured an egg-crate style grille. The lower body of the Cobra was painted black, a non-functional hood scoop gave the Cobra an aggressive look, and the rear-window louvers were painted the body color. The '79 Cobra was only available as a hatchback.

1979 Mustang sales surpassed those from 1978 by more than 150,000 units.

Our Color Name of the Year: Silver Metallic

Mustang sees very little change beyond the addition of P-metric radials and halogen headlights. The Mustang Cobra is altered more significantly with the addition of dual fog-integrated front air dam, hood scoop and rear spoiler, which are likely borrowed from the '79 Indy pace car parts bin. The Cobra utilizes the most powerful powerplant, the four-cylinder turbo. A 4.2L V-8 replaced the 5.0L V-8, but it had 21 fewer horsepower.

Total U.S. Production: 271,322

Ford President Donald Peterson establishes Special Vehicle Operations. SVO is instrumental in developing Ford's role in racing and bringing performance technology to production models.

The Sport Top option, a vinyl roof that looks very much like a convertible, seems to hint that a convertible is in the offing.

Optional Recaro bucket seats offer drivers more support during extreme handling maneuvers.

Sales begin to flatten with 182,552 Mustangs built for the 1981 model year. This is performance-oriented four-cylinder turbo bows out. Hardware improves with a new rear axle. This new Traction-Lok system makes launching the Mustang all the more enjoyable, as drivers have less wheel-hop to contend with.

1981 would mark the first year in Mustang history that hatchback models outsold coupes. The trend continued through the end of the Mustang's third generation in 1993.

1982

Our Color Name of the Year: Silver Metallic

The Mustang GT makes its long-awaited return, replacing the Cobra and the Ghia models. The GT's 5.0L H.O. realizes a significant increase in horsepower and performance, the result of high-performance camshaft, double-roller timing chain, two-barrel Holley carburetor and a four-speed Traction-lok rear end.

Lowered front air dam, a pair of menacing fog lights, front-facing hood scoop (non-functional) and rear spoiler reflect the enhancements made under the hood. More significant than its exterior and Recaro bucket seat interior, however, serious performance is taking shape.

The GLX was also available in 1982. The GLX was just a GT with a few more options.

Total U.S. Production: 130,418

Absent from the lineup for the past 13 years, the Mustang GT makes its return.

The California Highway Patrol purchases 400 5.0L notchback Special Service Mustangs, just in case anyone thinks they're going to outrun the law.

1983

Our Color Name of the Year: Silver Metallic

The big news for 1983 was the availability of the convertible for the first time since 1973. Ford outsourced the convertible to Cars & Concepts, which received coupes from the factory and returned them as convertibles.

The nose of the Mustang is made smoother and sharper. Revised taillights, a reverse hood scoop and the addition of a convertible are further progress. The GT receives a wide black hood stripe and fog lights that are set more deeply into the revised, less angular, front spoiler. The Ford blue oval would grace the Mustang for the first time ever, and was placed in the grille and on the decklid.

The GT is opened up with the addition of a 600-cfm four-barrel Holley carburetor. Able to take deep breaths, the 5.0L makes 175 horsepower, the most in a Mustang since 1973. The GT can reach sixty m.p.h. in under seven seconds. The 5-speed T-5 was a midyear change

Total U.S. Production: 120,873

The inline six engine is replaced by a 3.8-liter V6.

1984

Our Color Name of the Year: Silver Metallic

Mustang SVO makes its debut as a future-thinking alternative to the small block V8. Easy to distinguish from the rest of its third generation Fox brethren, the SVO features a grille-less swooping nose, large sealed-beam halogen headlights, an asymmetrical hood scoop and a biplane rear spoiler. The powerplant is a further departure. Utilizing an intercooled 2.3-liter turbocharged overhead-cam four-cylinder, the "machine" realizes 175 horsepower. The '85 and '86 models see increased turbo boost, a revised intake manifold, fuel injectors and exhaust flow take horsepower to 205 and 200 respectively.

Suspension and chassis are given considerable attention as SVO engineers seek balanced performance. Featuring Koni gas-charged shocks, 1.12-inch-diameter antisway bars, forged steel lower trailing arms, four wheel disc brakes and 16-inch wheels with P225/50VR Goodyear Gatorback radials.

Inside, the SVO is extremely well-accommodated. Included are: Hurst shifter, Recaro bucket seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel, dead pedal, 140 mph speedometer, 8000 rpm tachometer, turbo boost, water-temperature and oil-pressure gauges.

Road & Track lauds the SVO: "This may be the best all-around car for the enthusiast driver ever produced by the U.S. industry."

Also introduced is a 1984 1/2 20th Anniversary G.T. 350 model. The G.T. 350 was available as either a hatchback or convertible, and buyers could opt for either the turbocharged four-cylinder of the 5.0 HO. All were painted Oxford White with a Canyon Red interior, and sported original pony and stripes side emblems and two special 20th anniversary badges on the dashboard. Ford capitalized on the Mustang's past performance by adding tape side stripes with "G.T. 350" markings, an obvious reference to the Shelby days. Carroll Shelby did not approve of the package, since he had sold the rights to the "Cobra" name but not the "G.T. 350 or G.T. 500" names. Ford agreed not to use the name again, but only after the first 5,260 cars were built.

1984 introduced the first Saleen Mustang. The 1984 model would feature aerodynamic body panels and racing suspension components, but Saleen would begin adding engine modifications in following years.

1985

Our Color Name of the Year: Silver

The Mustang received a a cleaner front fascia in 1985. The egg-crate front grille was replaced by a nose that more closely resembled the clean look of the Mustang SVO. The headlights of the SVOs were changed mid-year in 1985 from being recessed to being flush with the corner lights. Horsepower in the SVO was also changed mid-year, from 175 to 205 horsepower.

To celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Twister Special, Ford produced 90 Twister II Mustangs.

The GT receives ten-hole alloy wheels and tasteful GT graphics.

The 5.0L H.O. Mustang GT is revised with a two-speed accessory belt drive, roller tappets and a high performance cam valvetrain. 210 horsepower is there for the taking so long as it is ordered without automatic-overdrive, which utilizes throttle body fuel injection, Central Fuel Injection.

1986

Our Color Name of the Year: Silver Metallic

The appearance of a Center High-Mounted Stoplight is the best way to discern an '85 from an '86 Mustang.

Carbureted Mustangs become a memory as sequential electronic fuel injection is introduced to the 5.0L H.O. V8. Nitrogen-charged gas struts and shocks, and heavier duty rear axle also debut on V8 models of the LX and GT.

The Mustang SVO era comes to an end, due in part to the 5.0L, which offers V8 performance at considerably less cost.

During its brief tenure, from 1984 through 1986, 9,844 Mustang SVOs are produced.
