Our Color Name of the Year: Iris Metallic


As early as 1989 it is determined that Mustang cannot continue much longer in its present form. Government mandated driver-side and passenger-side passive restraints, emissions and fuel economy standards make it impossible to produce the Fox-chassis Mustang economically beyond August 30, 1993. CEO Alex Trotman decides to appoint someone who is dedicated to preserving the front engine, rear wheel drive Mustang. Someone who is willing to work on the project on their own time.

Due to the fortitude of Mustang Business Planning Manager, O.J. "John" Coletti, along with Mustang Program Manager, Mike Zevalkink, and their after-hours "skunk team," a new Mustang is built around existing powertrain and chassis hardware. The platform, called Fox-4, is structurally more solid, owing mainly to larger rocker panels, roof rails and stronger joints. These changes go a long way toward preventing NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) and providing enhanced handling characteristics.

1994 marked the much-anticipated debut of Ford's fourth major Mustang redesign. The new pony car had plenty of power and more panache than ever, with styling cues picked up from 1964. The grille pony returned in 1994 after a 16-year absence. Designers said it was one of the best decisions they'd ever made.

Borrowing in part from the two-seater Mach III concept, the look of SN95 captures the earliest Mustang, yet is considerably more aerodynamic. Cat-like wrap-around headlights surround the grille and galloping pony emblem to create a face that is distinctly reminiscent of vintage Mustangs. A muscular, ridged hood sweeps effortlessly into a sharply raked windshield and short rear deck. Retro hood vents and side scoops and layered tri-bar taillights complete the major styling themes of the new Mustang.

A revamped interior is equally inspired. Instruments are surrounded by separate spheres for driver and passenger that originate in the dash and curve downward into the shifter bezel.

Engines include the 215-horsepower 5.0L V8 with silicone-alloy pistons, roller-cam valvetrain, 65 mm throttle body and tubular exhaust headers and a 145-horsepower 3.8-liter V6, which, like the 5.0L, features sequential electronic fuel injection.

Like its first-generation cousin, the 1994 Cobra convertible was selected as the pace car for the Indy 500. All 1994 Cobra convertibles were Indy 500 Pace Car editions. Just over 5000 other 1994 Cobra coupes were produced, and were available in only red, white, or black. The spoiler on Cobras were different than on other models, and included a built-in LED stop lamp.

The Mustang convertible, like all 1994 models, was well received by Mustang fans and sold well. The 1994 production Mustang sold a total of 123,198 vehicles, almost 10,000 units more than the previous year. Convertibles sales were a healthy 53,714.

From SVT comes the most intense factory Mustang to date, the 1995 Cobra R. Built for the track, Cobra R is equipped with a competition suspension, 351 5.8L V8 marine block with GT-40 cylinder heads, heavy-duty radiator and oil cooler, Tremec five-speed transmission and P255/45ZR17 BFGoodrich Comp T/A radials (and without stereo, air conditioner and back seats). A competition license from a sanctioned racing body is required to purchase one of 250 white Cobra R models.

To spot a Cobra R on the road, look for a fuel cell, unique 5-spoke "R" wheels, fiberglass hood that has been raised to clear the intake manifold and the absence of fog lights. If the look of the Cobra R isn't a dead giveaway, one need only hear the 5.8-liter 300 horsepower/365 foot-pounds of torque to know they are in the presence of one of the most potent Mustangs ever to roll off the Dearborn assembly line.

A GTS was added to the lineup for 1995. There were 6,370 produced--4,848 5-speeds and 1,522 automatics. GTSs came standard with the basic equipment that made a Mustang a GT. This included the 302cid pushrod V-8 powerplant, Borg-Warner T-5 manual transmission and a Traction-Lok axle. Obvious external characteristics of a GTS are the absence of a rear decklid spoiler, lack of fog lamps in the front airdam, and 16"x7" 5 spoke SN-95 pony rims. Factory original GTSs will have the "Mustang GT" logo embossed on the rear bumper cover, as is the case on standard GTs, and "Mustang GT" badging on the front fenders. Dual 2.25" stainless steel tail pipes exit the back.

Inside the passenger compartment, the GTS Mustang shared the same amenities as the base V-6 Mustang. Seats are cloth and 4-way power adjustable seats were only optional on the driver's side. Windows and door locks were manual. Only the driver and passenger side mirrors were powered. Air conditioning and an AM/FM stereo cassette player were standard. Visor mirrors were non-illuminated, as opposed to illuminated like the GT and convertible Mustangs. The instrument pod was the only interior amenity borrowed from the GT, and it included a 7000 rpm redline tach, 150 mph speedometer, fuel, volt, oil, and temp gauges.

As a side note, all options on V6 models were also available on the GTS. These options are easily broken down into two categories. Package Group 1 consisted of power windows, door locks and remote decklid release, which was standard on GT and convertible. Group 2 consisted of cruise control, dual illuminated visor mirrors (standard on GT and convertible), and an AM/FM stereo cassette player with premium sound. Four-wheel antilock brakes, an AODE transmission, and remote keyless entry were also options. Customers were able to order GTSs from the factory with as little or as many options as they wanted. Options were also available at the dealer, on request of the purchaser.

Ford did away with the GTS designation in 1996, with 1995 being the only year a true GTS model existed, replacing it with the 248A option package which deleted many things from the car and made it comparable to the GTS. This package continued to be offered until the end of the 1998 model year.

This is the last year for the venerable 5.0L 302 cid V8, marking the end of Mustang's overhead-valve/pushrod-engine era.

The SVT badge appears on the Cobra for the first time. The 1995 Cobra was powered by the same 240-hp 5.0L V-8 used in 1994 snakes. Color options on were Black (1433), White (1125), and Red (1447), for a total of 4005, and 1003 convertibles were produced. This model year was the only year for the convertible hardtop, and with only 499 models available, it has become a sought after collectible. The hardtop/ragtop was installed as a prototype on a few V6 and GT Mustangs, which have found their way into private hands, but were never "officially" produced. 1995 was also the last year for the well-known 5.0L, which is another feature creating a demand for some collectors.

Forgoing the torque-filled pushrod small block V8 that earned a fiercely loyal backing, Ford decides the time has come for more refined engineering to make its way into the Mustang. Despite its lowered displacement, the technologically advanced Modular 4.6-liter single-overhead-cam V8 yields 215 horsepower for the GT, the same as '95.

The SVT Mustang Cobra's aluminum-alloy derivative of the 4.6-liter Modular double-overhead-cam V8 increases output substantially, making 305 horsepower. The Cobra embraces Ford's global approach, using Teksid to cast its engine block in Carmagnola, Italy. Teksid is credited with casting components for Ferrari road and Formula One cars, and the aerospace industry.

"Cobra" occupies the molded rear bumper of the SVT Mustang Cobra, replacing "Mustang." SVT Cobras came in four colors: Laser Red, Crystal White, Black, and Mystic. Mystic was a color-changing paint. Depending on the angle of the light, the cars could look green, purple, or bronze. Mystic is an expensive color. A bottle of touch-up paint is $35, and can only be obtained through licensed SVT dealers. The reason for the markup is that Mystic was developed by BASF, and the green used to make it is the same green used to make U.S. paper currency.

Each version of the 4.6-liter engine is mated to a Borg-Warner T-45 five speed manual transmission, replacing the T-5. Taller and wider with revised gear tooth geometry, the T-45 is smoother and stronger than the T-5.

The 4.6-liter engines are taller than the 5.0L powerplants, requiring more space at the bottom of the engine bay. To compensate, a cross-member is added to the body, which in addition to increasing rigidity, supports the engine and front suspension.

Revised front geometry, castor and camber leads to improved steering precision and feel. The rear suspension utilizes a bigger rear stabilizing bar to balance the updated front suspension. The Cobra enhances handling further with front and rear variable rate springs.

The GT gets a new badge, designating the advanced technology under the hood.

Horizontally opposed taillights are shifted to a vertical configuration, resembling Oros' original. A theme borrowed from the Torino and Mustang II Concept car of the early sixties, tri-bar taillights are one of Mustang's enduring characteristics.

A honeycomb grille appears behind the galloping pony, a good way to distinguish the front of a '96 Mustang from a '95.

The only way to differentiate a '97 from a '98 is to see if a clock pod is mounted to the dash. If not, it's a '98 and the clock is integrated into the audio system.

Exhaust ports are overhauled, bringing another 10 horsepower to the GT.

The #1 sales year for the SVT Mustang Cobra, which is now fitted with five-spoke '95 Cobra R-like rims.
