Below you will find useful information about the color we love so much. The color silver has gone through a series of name changes and some years was not even produced. Below you will find the years broken out, the name of silver or close to the color silver for that year, and silver production numbers if information was made available.
1999

Our Color Name of the Year: Silver

1999 marked Mustang's 35th anniversary, and Mustang got a fresh new look. Though still based on the Fox platform, the smooth lines from 1994-1998 were replaced with an edgier design. The grille corral reappeared for the first time since 1973. Both V-6 and GT Mustangs wore "35th Anniversary" fender badges.

Sweeping hood, side scoops and short rear deck recall the past, while crisp, beveled surfaces invite new interpretation.

Improved aspiration helps the 4.6-liter V8 and the 3.8-liter V6 engines increase horsepower more than adequately. A new Traction Control System is available to help detect and control drive wheel-spin, for improved traction and steering under slippery road conditions. Finally, revised shock and strut valving dampen ride harshness while providing better steering response.

Although every Standard and GT had the 35th Anniversary fender badges, only 4,628 GTs were 35th Anniversary Limited Edition models. There were 2318 coupes and 2310 convertibles. There were 515 that came in white, 1259 in silver, 1299 in black, and 1555 in Performance Red, which was only available on this limited edition. These Limited Edition GTs had a raised hood scoop with a black stripe which ran from the scoop down the front of the hood, extended side scoops, a wing-like spoiler, and a black honeycomb insert in the decklid.

The 1999 SVT Cobras had round foglamps and a small rear-facing hood scoop near the front of the hood. They were otherwise identical to 1999 Mustang GTs, even with "MUSTANG" in the rear bumper and GT seats. The '99 snakes did not have the corral around the grille pony. Though Ford advertised 320-hp for the '99 Cobras, they really only made 305. All of the cars received a new intake manifold, catback exhaust, and computer calibration to produce the as-advertised 320 hp.

2000

Our Color Name of the Year: Silver

Mustang went unchanged in 2000, aside from the removal of the 35th Anniversary fender badges. The V-6 and GT were indiscernible from the outside, except for the dual exhaust cutouts in the bumper of the GT.

2000 would be the last year that 16" wheels came standard on GT. The GTs with 16s were speed governed at 110 mph.

Ford released 3,091 Spring Feature Mustangs for the 2000 model year. The package was offered in Performance Red, Black, Silver, White, and Zinc Yellow, which appeared only on the Spring Feature cars in 2000 and returned in 2001. The package was available only on GTs and included the following features:

Special 17" X 8" bright machined 5-spoke wheels and performance tires

35th Anniversary body-color hood scoop

35th Anniversary body-color side scoops

Twin black stickers on each side of hood scoop with color-keyed GT lettering

Black "MUSTANG" bumper inserts

No 2000 Cobras were produced because of the problems with the 1999 models, but SVT unveiled the 2000 SVT Cobra R. Rs were only available in red. They had no heater, air conditioner, rear seat, or sound deadening material. What it did have were a new front valence, side exhaust, racing seats, a 5.4L V-8 pushing 385-hp, and exclusivity--only 300 were made.

2001

Our Color Name of the Year: Silver

All Mustangs in 2001 got the 2000 Cobra R's smoked headlamps, and the spoiler was changed to a more wing-like style. GTs got the raised hood scoop and side scoops used on 35th Anniversary Limited Edition Mustangs in 1999, as well the option of the retro Torque Thrust-inspired wheels on the Bullitt GT. 2001 Mustang GTs would all come standard with 17" wheels.

The limited edition Bullitt GT was available in 2001, paying homage to the 1968 Steve McQueen movie by the same name, in which McQueen's character Lt. Frank Bullitt got behind the wheel of a Highland Green 1968 GT390 Fastback and chased two assassins in a black Dodge Charger R/T. The 2001 Mustang Bullitt GT was available in three colors: Black, the new True Blue, and Dark Highland Green, borrowed from Ford's F-Series lineup. There were 3041 green, 1818 black, and 723 blue Bullitts produced. Dark Highland Green was not available on any other Mustang. Exterior features included a blacked-out corral around the pony in the grille, red brake calipers with a silver Mustang, simpler side scoops, and a brushed aluminum fuel door. Spoilers and fog lamps weren't available on the Bullitt. 2001 Bullitt Mustangs had a retro interior theme. The new seats were designed after seats from the 1960s, and were much more comfortable than the standard seats. The numbers in the gauge cluster were written in a tall, thin font like in the 1960s as well. The shifter was aluminum and the door lock soldiers were silver, as was the shifter trim ring. The Bullitts had a different intake than the GT they were based upon, and the upgrades resulted in an additional five horsepower. The C-pillars were also altered, and "BULLITT" was engraved on the sill plates. Although Ford planned to produced 6500 Bullitts, only 5582 made it off the line.

The Cobra returned in 2001 with a new interior, "COBRA" in the rear bumper where it said "MUSTANG" in 1999, the spoiler used on the V-6 and GT Mustangs, and a 320-hp 4.6L DOHC V-8.

2002

Our Color Name of the Year: Satin Silver

There were two salesroom brochures for 2002. The original version featured the World Trade Centers but was recalled after the tragic events of September 11, 2001.

The 2002 Mustang offered the Visteon Mach 1000 audio system. The system produced over 1,100 watts of peak power and featured a 60-watt parametrically equalized amplifier, six 85-watt subwoofer amplifiers, four 5.5 x 7.5-inch subwoofer speakers, four midrange tweeters and two 10-inch trunk-mounted acoustic suspension enclosures. Standard with the Mach 1000 was an in-dash six-disc CD changer with an MP3 player option.

Sonic Blue was added to the lineup, and the leather on the steering wheel on premium package cars was slightly changed. The optional stripe on the side of the V-6 Mustangs was thicker, and 16" wheels were standard.

Only a handful of Cobras were made, and they were all shipped to Australia, where they were converted to right-hand drive, and side marker lights and another set of fog lamps were set inside the front bumper. The 2003 Cobra would hit dealer showrooms in June of 2002, so the production run on '02 snakes was cut short.

2003

Our Color Name of the Year: Silver Metallic

Despite GM's axing of Mustang's strongest competition--Camaro and Firebird--in 2003, Ford beefed up its Mustang lineup for the year, supercharging the Cobra and reviving the Mach 1 moniker.

Dark Shadow Grey and Redfire were added to the color options, replacing Mineral Grey and Laser Tint Red. Azure Blue was available for the Mach 1 only.

The 2003 V-6 Mustang got the hood from 1999 and 2001 Cobras with a small rear-facing scoop.

The Pony Edition Mustang was added to the nationwide lineup in 2003, after being a Florida-only edition in 2001 and 2002. It was a V-6 with the raised GT hood scoop, Stampeding Pony door graphics, polished 16" wheels, and black bumper inserts.

An interior upgrade package was added for the 2003 GT, and included larger headrests and silver interior enhancements like the shifter ring, door lock soldiers, and instrument bezel. A Bright Wheel option was available, but this was nothing more than the chrome 1999 and 2001 Cobra wheel with Mustang centercaps.

Ford celebrated its 100th Anniversary in June of 2003, and made limited edition F-Series Super Duty trucks, Explorers, Tauruses, Focuses, and Mustang GTs to commemorate the event. The 100th Anniversary models only came in black, and included Premium Verona-grain Imola leather seating surfaces in two-tone parchment, and the Mustang got the GT premium package which included 17" wheels, anti-lock brakes and traction control; dual exhaust; power driver's seat with power lumbar support; leather-wrapped steering wheel; and Mach 460 AM/FM Stereo with six-disc CD changer, as well as 100th Anniversary badges on the fender and decklid and embossed on the seats. The Centennial Package was a $995 upgrade.

The Mach 1 returned in 2003 with a four-valve DOHC 305-hp V-8 engine sitting under a functional Shaker hood scoop. A flat black stripe ran from the scoop to the front of the hood, a black Mach 1 stripe ran the length of the side, the spoiler was painted black, it got rolled exhaust tips like the 2001 Bullitt, and Comfort Weave seats like the original Mach 1. A new version of the classic Magnum 500 wheel was the only option for the 2003 Mach 1. The Mach 1 was available in six colors: Oxford White, Zinc Yellow, Torch Red, Black, Azure Blue, and Dark Shadow Grey.

2003 Cobras began hitting showrooms in June of 2002 with a supercharged 4.6L DOHC V-8 pushing 390-hp. Two inverted hood scoops extracted heat from the engine, the front and rear bumpers were redesigned, and GT side scoops and a new spoiler were added. The '03 Cobras had 6-speed manual transmissions.

Ten years after SVT introduced its first product--the 1993 SVT Cobra R--they released a special 10th Anniversary 2003 SVT Cobra. The 10th Anniversary Package was available as either a coupe or convertible, and featured unique 17x9-inch dark argent painted anniversary wheels, red leather seating surfaces in the front and rear, interior trim with the appearance of carbon fiber, red painted brake calipers, and SVT 10th Anniversary badges on the floor mats and rear decklid. SVT produced 2,003 units of the Anniversary model, which were available in Torch Red, Black Clearcoat, and Silver Metallic.

2004

Our Color Name of the Year: Silver Metallic

2004 marked Mustang's 40th Anniversary, and all models (except Cobra) wore a 40th Anniversary badge on the fenders. SIRIUS satellite radio was added as an option. ABS was longer standard on Premium models, but a $730 option. Dealer-installed options included a mesh windscreen for convertibles and keyless entry.
